About Infectious Disease in Nevada

There is a decades-long shortage of infectious disease physicians in Nevada. According to the Nevada Board of Medical Examiners there are about 22 active infectious diseases (ID) physicians in Southern Nevada for a population of 2.38 million people (that is roughly one ID physician for every 108,000 residents). Of the 22, not all of them actively practice locally as many live out of state.

Of those that practice in Southern Nevada, SNIDS estimates that about 80% of them exclusively see patients in the hospital setting and 20% have outpatient clinics to provide proper care after discharge. The challenge to patients seeking quality sub-specialty care is clear, as is the incredible burden on clinicians given the provider shortage.

Our Story

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, multiple healthcare workers have worked tirelessly to promote cross collaboration between local health care industries to share key information and best practices to bolster community response.

SNIDS was created in 2020 as a central meeting place for these practitioners and decision-makers.

The SilverSummit Healthplan's investment into this program is highly significant. It ensures that the future generation of infectious disease physicians are properly trained and supported to provide the highest level of care for our communities.

We thank SilverSummit Healthplan for recognizing the importance of this initiative and support its goals to serve Nevada's health care needs
