The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the importance of ID Physicians' contributions to society in patient care and through public health efforts. During the formative stage of SNIDS, Luis Medina-Garcia, MD, FIDSA, visited many private ID practices and found that they are uniformly overworked and under-supported. When inquiring why they haven’t expanded their teams, the principal reason is an inability to recruit candidates even with nationally competitive compensation packages.

Since then, Dr. Medina-Garcia created the first ID fellowship program in Nevada at Southern Hills Hospital. SNIDS is commited to supporting this Fellow by providing a stipend, financial support for out-of-pocket expenses related to ongoing professional development, and a community of ID physicians to network and learn from.
